think that's wrong. but if you look at, for example, the state that the president was in today, nevada, there is a republican hispanic governor in the state, very popular, brian sandoval. you look at new mexico republican hispanic governor susana martinez. part of the problem republicans have communicating to hispanics is the total utter toxicity of the republican brand, the washington, d.c. brand. but once you're able to break out of that d.c. brand, republicans are able to put an imprint that is appropriate for nevada or new mexico on the party. and you're finding success there. now, i don't think that the numbers that you talked about on those issues are permanent. republicans when we just finish the presidential election where we were doomed by comments like the 47%, we need to have a message that reaches out to every american, is about empowerment, is about climbing the socio-economic ladder, about revitalizing the american middle class that has been in decline. we have to talk about those things. we have to have plans that are grounded in reality to deal with the problems that am

ahead the president's speech tomorrow in nevada where he will talk up his immigration plan from 2011. like the president this bipartisan plan from these senators would provide this pathway to citizenship. it would include a registration and probation program that would allow the nations illegal immigrants, 11 million of them or so, to stay in the united states and live and work with a green card as long as they paid taxes and penalties and then got in line for proper application for citizenship. but first, these senators want to beef up border security. they want to improve the tracking of legal immigrants who may stay beyond their legal immigration status. they also want to strengthen the ememployment verification system and create a green card system for top foreign college students getting ph.ds and massers degrees in math and sciences. senator mccain, for republicans would be good politically but one republican senator he was not yet ready to sign on. take a listen. >> we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. we can

will give a speech in las vegas, nevada. he was supposed to outline his own plan for immigration, but now he's going to take these eight senators' plan for immigration and say he's on board. why doesn't he just present his own plan, maria? >> well, i actually think it's smart of the white house to take the plan of the gang of eight in the senate and say that the president supports it. there will be some differences. the white house has outlined some of the differences the president will talk about today. we know that he wants, perhaps, a smoother and easier way path to citizenship. i think that's smart, too, because if you can look at the plan from the white house and then take the plan from the senators, there's some differences there. there is a place to negotiate. there is a place -- a place to meet in the middle. because this is still very much an uphill battle. i think that you have senators that understand what needs to be done. and they have been -- they have been speaking very forthrightly and smartly, i think. there are still a lot of republicans both in the house and in the senate
